Americana design has its roots in the homespun, Arts and Crafts movement that revolted against industrial mass-production and flourished in Europe and North American between 1880 and 1920. Its aim is to glorify craftsmanship, folk art, homegrown traditions, and vintage small-town America. In essence, Americana is a romanticized, idealized interpretation of pastoral America, steeped in folklore and historical significance.

The Style Defined

This style blends patriotic, primitive, and country farmhouse motifs; you can emphasize whichever component you prefer, but these concepts do have some themes in common. For starters, all three rely heavily on textures and traditional prints to sell the look. In an Americana-inspired room, you’ll find gingham and floral fabrics, whitewashed and distressed woods, burlap, denim, and quilts with time-honored patterns. Naturally, you’ll also encounter a celebration of stars and stripes and the incorporation of red, white and blue into the color palette. Other touches that are typically included in the Americana style include mason jars, fresh flowers, antique tchotchkes, vintage advertisements, and old maps. But a word to the wise: resist the temptation to overdo it. You want the style to be chic, not cheesy. Americana décor should be effortless and feel like it’s been unchanged through the generations.

Why its Trending

Nostalgia never goes out of style. For some, the past is always golden, and Americana design is a way to remember the good ol’ days when life was simpler. For those who want to honor their patriotism, family history or regional influence, Americana interior design is the go-to. And, the Americana style incorporates lots of low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for materials, fabrics and decorative accents that are tough and durable – making it an ideal choice for households with youngsters trotting about.

American Theme

Furniture in the Americana vein is casual and may draw from colonial or cottage inspiration. Distressed woods, natural grains and antiqued metals are hallmark materials in Americana furnishings. Design-wise, these pieces are simple and straightforward without too many embellishments. Americana furniture incorporates lots of clean edges and plank or slatted construction. Some pieces, including benches and cabinets, may include low compound arches and wood cut-outs. Americana furniture, overall, is solid and sturdy, showcasing craftsmanship that endures through the decades.
