Over the past few years, podcasts have become a growing segment of our listening diets. We love podcasts of all types. We’ve got news podcasts that we listen to daily. Book podcasts are fun occasionally. Comedy podcasts are pretty much always our jam. Regardless, we sometimes find ourselves wishing for just a bit more traffic on our way home from work so that we can keep listening to our favorites.
However, it’s only recently that we have started to really delve into design podcasts, and we thought we’d share a bit of what we’ve discovered about this really great corner of the audio world. Here are a few of our favorites. Give them a download!
Chris Loves Julia
This couple has a fabulous blog chronicling their home projects and renovation. They have a great rapport that translates well into this fun audio version of their regular travails around their home and with their family. It isn’t being recorded anymore, but the 60 episodes on the website make for a really great binge, especially if you are in the midst of (or considering) some home renovations. Listen here.
Meet Jaime and Amy, the hosts of the Clever podcast. These two have an interview style we just can’t get enough of, so it’s a good thing that each episode is really focused around an interview with a leading figure in the design world. The guests span a variety of fields, including architecture, interior design, furniture and even cars. Listen here.
Evan Troxel, Neal Pann, and Cormac Phalen host this bi-weekly discussion podcast on the worlds of architecture and interior design. What’s especially fun about their conversations is how they spend just as much time talking about what it’s like to work in these creative fields as they do on the design itself and its context in the larger discussion of the day. Listen here.
The Unofficial Fixer Upper Podcast
As obsessed with Fixer Upper as we are? We were THRILLED to discover this podcast because it helps to feed our addiction. (And we though Bachelor/Bachelorette podcasts were the only ones out there…) Gary and Kathy Leland, fellow Fixer Upper addicts, spend their time each week breaking down the latest episode, reviewing everything from the design choices, renovation details and unexpected challenges that always cause most of the drama. They even get into the real estate and market details, which we always find fun and illuminating. Listen here.
99 Percent Invisible
This one is really fascinating, and not what we expected at all. This podcast dives into the mostly invisible design and decorating choices that have an outsize affect on our daily lives. Why are those inflatable men always at used car lots? What’s the fortune cookie story? These are really great deep-dives into the small decisions that have big impacts. And you’ll learn lots of great party talk for the upcoming holiday season. Listen here.
